Child struck by car in Orange County

A third-grader was released from the hospital with minor injuries after being involved in a crash Tuesday.

The incident happened just before 4 p.m. at the intersection of Balboa Drive and North Powers Drive in the Pine Hills community.

The driver, who has been identified by authorities as a crossing guard for a nearby middle school, told troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol that the streetlight was green when she made a right turn onto Balboa Drive.

However, the 8-year-old child told officials he was clear to cross according to the crosswalk signal. The child was on a bike at the time of the crash.

“She is dealing with kids, and she hit my kid. The only one I have,” said mother Portia Williams. “He takes the same route every day ever since kindergarten and we’ve never had any issues. He knows how to use the button, he knows how to use a crosswalk.”

The child was transported to an area hospital after the incident, where he was treated for minor injuries.
