Orlando officer almost struck during traffic stop
ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Orlando's police chief is speaking out after one of his officers was targeted during a traffic stop. It was just before midnight on Tuesday along Pine Hills Road, when Chief John Mina says one of his officers was almost hit during a traffic stop. It was a blue Dodge Ram truck that came out of nowhere, while Officer Amanda Weeman had a different car pulled over.
"They heard a vehicle approach at a high rate of speed with no lights on swerve from the outside lane to the inside lane almost striking one of our officers, that officer almost had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit by the vehicle," Chief Mina says.
Officers were able to locate the pickup truck in a nearby driveway. They questioned the people inside, but they still have not been able to make an arrest. "Unfortunately the officers weren't able to identify who was driving the vehicle so no charges have been filed at this time."
While he is relieved the officer was not injured Chief Mina says he's concerned. "It does seem like there's more violence towards police officers these days." He is hoping someone from the public will call in with information regarding this case or others involving officers who are targeted. "That's their number one priority to protect the public, so obviously that's very concerning that someone would try to hurt one of our officers."
