Emotions run deep over remnants of Confederacy

Ripped from the ground and removed from the public eye. Statues and monuments paying tribute to the Confederacy have become the center of a heated debate nationwide and here in Florida.

There have been controversies in Lakeland, Gainesville, Tavares and even Downtown Orlando.  But the ones that have made the news – are just scratching the surface. The Southern Poverty Law Center has tracked more than 1,700 Confederate symbols still standing in the U.S. 

“I think there is quite a bit of ignorance about how much memorializing to the confederacy exists across the south,” said Heidi Beirich, of the Southern Poverty Law Center. 

So what confederate tributes are lingering in Central Florida and why have they been left alone? The News Station investigates in this special assignment.
