Boy born with half a heart beating the odds

ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - At first look, Lucas Iguina is like most 4th graders. That is, until he lifts up his shirt to show off the scar on his chest. A reminder of his rare heart disease, hypoplastic left. 

Lucas has been fighting for his life since he was three days old. Getting open heart surgery three times before his third birthday.

His mom Jennifer, finding out about the rare condition five months into her pregnancy.

"It's not easy its a struggle and there are days that are harder than other days."

The condition means he was born with only half his heart. The other half, reconstructed by doctors at Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital.

"You think of the outcomes and you think you know what's going to happen, what's going to be in the long run. Is he going to be able to play like the other kids? And he is," said the 11-year-old's mom.

Now that Lucas is stable, he's fighting for others with his condition. Mom, Lucas and family will travel to Washington, D.C. at the end of the month, to share his story with elected officials. They hope raising awareness will bring much needed funding to families in need.

“You don't know what tomorrow will bring. You don't know what the future will bring,” Jennifer said.
