A shocking discovery early Friday morning after a newborn was found abandoned on the front porch of a home in south Fulton County.

The baby was discovered at a residence on the 3700 block of Leisure Lane around 3:30 a.m. Fulton County Police said someone at the residence called 911 to report that they had found an infant on their front porch. During the initial investigation, officers discovered a 17-year-old girl at the home had given birth. Paramedics transported the young mother and her newborn to Grady Memorial Hospital.

"I feel bad for her to be in that predicament to feel like she had to leave that baby outside," said neighbor Jacola Gillenwater.

Gillenwater has kids of her own. She said she would've taken the baby in had she known the infant had been left outside in frigid weather.

"I would've brought the baby here. The baby could've stayed with me," Gillenwater said.

Residents in the neighborhood expressed that they are thankful the newborn survived the ordeal.

"I don't like people leaving babies out," one neighbor said discussing how the baby could have died. "Very much could have. Especially in the temperatures out now."

Friday afternoon, police said the girl's parents didn't know she was pregnant.

Gillenwater wonders how long the infant was outside before being discovered.

"Oh my gosh, it's just mind-blowing. I mean I wish I would've heard something so I could've brought the baby inside," said Gillenwater.
