A ban on sunscreen could save the world's coral reefs

A ban on sunscreen could begin to save coral reefs around the world, all thanks to a biologist at the University of Central Florida (UCF).

Back in 2015, Associate Professor John Fauth and his team discovered a certain sunscreen ingredient disrupts coral reproduction and causes bleaching. This kills the reefs, which impacts both local economies and ocean species.

Legislators in Hawaii put together a bill to ban sunscreens with Oxybenzone and it has since been approved. The bill still needs the Governor's signature.
