The Smokehouse Creek Fire in Texas is already the largest in the state’s history, and it’s still burning. And while everything may be bigger in Texas, the state does not claim the biggest wildfires in U.S. history.

How wildfires get their names

Unlike hurricanes and tropical storms, whose storm names are determined by a central authority, naming wildfires are left up to the fire unit, incident commander, or dispatch center in the jurisdiction where the fire began.
