Volusia County man says he accidentally shot longtime girlfriend

Volusia County detectives are investigating a fatal shooting in Oak Hill.

A woman was killed in the incident, which was reported to the sheriff's office around 5 p.m. in the area of Brooks Circle and Saturday Drive. She was later identified as 53-year-old Dawn M. Schaefer. The shooter stayed on scene and was interviewed by detectives. The Volusia County Sheriff's Office later confirmed that the shooter was her longtime boyfriend 49-year-old Andrew McGee.

Deputies says that the shooting occurred in the dark and rain in a wooded area near the couple's tent. The shooter told deputies that he heard gunshots in the area and came out of the tent to fire a warning shot in response to the gunshots. He said he then slipped and accidentally shot Schaefer with an old, poorly functioning shotgun. She was not visible to him in the dark.

No charges have been in this case, but it remains active.
