Volusia Co. Beach Patrol: Man struck by lightning

Volusia County Beach Patrol officials say a man was struck by lightning in Daytona Beach.

Officials say the 55-year-old man was working on the beach at a concession stand when he was struck.

We're told the man was conscious and able to respond to instructions from first responders.

It happened in the Silver Beach area at around 4:15 p.m. on Sunday.

Officials say the man had lacerations from apparently biting his lip when he was struck.

He told beach patrol he was riding an ATV when the bolt hit the vehicle, throwing him off.

Officers say the ATV showed signs of being struck by lightning.

Officials say the strike coincided with a beach patrol officer in the same area who said he thought his jeep was struck, which disabled the vehicle.

He said he was OK, but asked for help in finding another possible victim, which turned out to be the 55-year-old man.

Officials say the man was taken to Halifax hospital to be further evaluated.
