ORLANDO, Fla. - A 16-year-old suspect is in custody after allegedly firing dozens of rounds into a Pine Hills home on two separate occasions within hours.
Surveillance video aided deputies in arrest
What we know:
Surveillance footage from January 8 shows the suspect shooting from a car at 2:40 a.m. before returning at 8:40 a.m. to fire again after yelling at children near a bus stop.
Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) deputies tracked him down hours later at a home three miles away, where he refused to drop his gun. Deputies opened fire but did not hit him.
He now faces five charges, including attempted first-degree murder.
Pine Hills, a community west of Orlando, has faced challenges with violent crime in recent years, with law enforcement working to curb gun violence. While no one was killed, the suspect’s alleged actions endangered multiple people, including children waiting for a school bus, authorities said.
Officials confirmed that while deputies were unharmed, another individual with the suspect suffered a gunshot wound to the leg but is expected to recover.
What we don't know:
Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the shootings or whether the suspect knew the residents of the targeted home. It is also unclear if he acted alone or had accomplices.
Due to his age, officials have not released his identity. Investigators have not confirmed whether additional charges could be filed or if the case will be moved to adult court.
What they're saying:
Deputies recalled the tense moment they confronted the armed teen.
"Show me your hands, show me your hands! Get down, get down," one deputy could be heard yelling from the backyard before he pulled the trigger.
A few seconds later, a deputy at the front of the house also fired.
"Shots fired, shots fired," is repeated on the deputy’s radio.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office credited security footage for helping them track down the suspect quickly.
What's next:
The investigation remains ongoing.
