Polk County confirms six cases of rabies this year

Polk County confirmed on Friday its sixth case of rabies this year.

The sheriff's office animal control section said on Wednesday, deputies received a call from a Waverly dog owner whose boxer had a bat in its mouth.

Officials say when the boxer dropped the bat, the woman killed the bat with a shovel.

Animal control officials say the bat was sent for rabies testing and the results came back positive.

In a release, deputies say the dog was vaccinated and obtained a rabies booster.
