Jellyfish, rip current concerns for Labor Day beachgoers

Late Monday afternoon beach patrol reported that 103 Labor Day beachgoers had been stung by jellyfish in Volusia County.  Volusia County Beach Patrol flew the purple and yellow flags at lifeguard towers to warn people, respectively, of hazardous marine life and a moderate rip current.

Officials reported that lifeguard pulled 14 people from the rough surf without incident.  Beach patrol captain Tammy Marris said it was a relatively smooth end to a successful season in Volusia County.  “The summer went great.  We started it off really crazy Memorial Day weekend with the rescues, but other than that it’s been pretty calm throughout the whole summer,” Marris said.
