Baby sloth welcomed after hard birth at Rhode Island zoo

Mom Fiona and dad Welsey – two Linne’s two-toed sloths – welcomed a new baby in the world at Roger Williams Park Zoo and Carousel Village on May 13.

The zoo in Providence, Rhode Island, announced the new resident on May 18, adding that it had been a hard labor for Fiona in a Facebook post.

“Veterinarians and animal care staff manually assisted with the birth when it was clear that Fiona was not able to make additional progress. At first the baby was not moving, but after being warmed finally responded,” the post said.

“Today mom and baby are doing well but will require lots of continual love and care. Thank you to our incredible team for all that they do.”
