Sandra Bland family settles wrongful death lawsuit: report
NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - The family of a woman who was found hanging in her jail cell after a traffic stop in Texas that lead to her arrest, has settled a wrongful death lawsuit for $1.9M, according to multiple media outlets.
The lawyer for Sandra Bland's family, Cannon Lambert, said in a televised interview Thursday that Waller County had also agreed to changes in jail procedures.
Bland was pulled over for an improper lane change on July 10, 2015. Dash cam video showed a struggle between the officer and Bland.
The 28-year-old was found in her jail cell three days later. The medical examiner ruled her death a suicide, but her family maintained that Bland would not have taken her life.
Her mother, Geneva Reed-Veal, has been vocal about police brutality in the United States. She spoke at the Democratic Convention in July along with the mothers of other African Americans who have been killed by law enforcement.
In Bland's case, the grand jury decided not to charge anyone at the jail.
