Parents concerned about safety at bus stop

Some Volusia County parents say the bus stop where they take their kids every morning has gotten too dangerous.

It’s at Derbyshire Road and 13th Street near Daytona Beach. People are complaining that Derbyshire gets too busy for elementary school students to safely cross. They also say impatient drivers are cutting around stopped traffic, putting kids in danger as they head toward the bus.

“It’s dangerous, the cars speed up and down here. Even when the parents are out here with the kids,” said Marquette Hill, who takes her grandson to the bus stop.

The News Station contacted Volusia County Schools about the complaint.  A spokesperson sent us the following statement:

“We received a call from a concerned citizen who lives near the bus stop, indicating elementary students are congregating near the road and may be in danger of being hit by passing cars. Our transportation department is re-evaluating the stop to determine if another location should be established.”
