Library answers questions Google cannot

People need a place to go to ask questions that are not easily answered and that place is still the library. Inside the New York Public Library, you will find senior reference librarian Matthew J. Boylan. Like a detective, he hunts for answers inside the millions of books stored here. He and a small group of other reference librarians answer 10,000 questions a month, tackling topics the curious can't find on Google.

"I love answering questions," Boylan says.  "I simply love being involved in the chase to find the information."

The library has been posting the most interesting of those questions on the @nypl Instagram account. Many date back decades. Here is one from 1961: "Is there a full moon every night in Acapulco?" That would be nice wouldn't it?

Boylan says another one of his favorites is, "I'm writing about Cleopatra.  What were her shoes made of?"

He says his team will try to answer any question that comes in.

"Almost every question that can be posed can be answered here if you use the resources," Boylan says.

So the next time you find yourself perplexed, puzzled, and wondering where to turn, you might want to reach out to the experts that have been solving mysteries of the mind here since 1913.
