Homeowners in Wisconsin started 2019 with quite the surprise when they found a stranger in their dog’s bed.

According to Waukesha police, the man was “heavily intoxicated after celebrating New Year’s Eve. He accidentally entered the wrong residence” and fell asleep with the owner’s 150-pound Mastiff, Benton, on its bed, according to WITI. The homeowner, Lynn Sarver, said Benton was fast asleep, partially on top of the man.

Sarver said she woke up at 5:15 a.m. Tuesday to find the intruder fast asleep just a few feet away.

“They told me it could have been a lot worse,” explained Lynn Sarver, the homeowner, “and I believe that. We ran into the kitchen and grabbed a knife.”

The young man was held by the homeowner until officers arrived. They said the man was cooperative.

“(The young man) didn't know where he was. He couldn't see. His glasses were tossed around the living room somewhere,” Sarver recalled. “He was very apologetic. Seeing someone sleeping with my dog...it's weird, you know?"

The man lived a few doors down, and thought Sarver’s house was his own. Police said he may have entered through an unlocked side door.

No charges were filed against the stranger, and he went back to his correct home.

Oddly, a similar incident occurred in Germantown, about 20 miles away from Waukesha. WITI reported a homeowner called police after a different young man entered their home after a New Year’s Eve party.

That incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. on January 1. The homeowner held the man until officers arrived, and he was eventually taken home by his mother.
