Florida day care worker hit by stray bullet outside school

A daycare worker is recovering in the hospital after she was hit by a stray bullet in Orlando.

Part of Ivey Lane was shut down for hours as deputies searched for evidence in a shooting where a daycare worker was hit by a stray bullet.

Talk about wrong place, wrong time.

“I was in the bathroom, matter of fact and I was looking out the window. and I heard like, six shots. Bam, bam, bam.”

Velma Jefferson heard the shots fired near Gore Street and Ivey Lane in Orlando in broad daylight. Orange County deputies say two cars were involved in the shootout that ultimately hurt someone completely uninvolved: a daycare employee sitting outside Scholars Prep Academy when a stray bullet came her way.

“Oh my god. I'm so sorry about that. You know there's just so much violence going on. I just wish everything would stop,” said Jefferson.

“It's rough out here. everybody's trying to live. it's a hard place,” said neighbor Michael Ikner.

Deputies spent hours searching for bullet shell casings and evidence. They say one person involved in the shooting reached out and is cooperating with the investigation.

But deputies are still searching for answers, while neighbors remain grateful it wasn’t worse.

“I'm really used to it. I was just hoping no one got hurt or killed. It could have been kids out there also you know,” said Jefferson.

The woman hit in the shooting was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. She is expected to be okay.

So far no arrests have been made.
