Elderly woman carjacked in church parking lot

A 93-year-old DeLand woman was walking through the parking lot of St. Peter's Church on Thursday morning when she was attacked, police say.  Parishioners ran to help.

According to investigators, the suspect, identified as David Perkins, grabbed the woman's keys, then pushed her down. She got up and reached into the car and tried to stop the suspect.  She held onto the steering wheel, even as the suspect was hitting the gas.

"She was dragged about 20 feet, until she couldn't hang on anymore!" says Police Chief Jason Umberger.

At some point, suspect Darius Matthews got in the car.  Police caught up with the suspects a few blocks away and also recovered the car.

The victim was scraped and bruised, but she refused to go to the hospital.
