Deputies: 19-year-old arrested in connection with stabbing death of younger half-brother

An arrest has been made in the stabbing death of a 15-year-old teen from Leesburg, but the person arrested is not who you may expect.

Marcus Williams, 31, is accused of stabbing and killing Jayquan Newbold, 15, on June 27.

On Friday, Lake County Investigators made an arrest in connection to the case, but it isn't Williams.  It's Jayquan Newbold's half-sister, Rayquell Weatherspoon, 19.

Deputies say if she hadn't taken the 15-year-old with her to the Palm Brook Apartments on Brook Circle in Leesburg, he'd be alive.

Sheriff's Office spokesman Fred Jones said, “She was arrested for principal to aggravated battery for what happened to Marcus Williams, but also child neglect for Jayquan who was fatally stabbed.”

According to Jones, Weatherspoon took Jayquan, three other juveniles and even her infant child to Williams’ apartment the morning after she and him had an argument.

Detectives say the two had been dating and she wanted to beat him up.

Deputies say they waited for Williams at the apartment, where they attacked him.

Investigators say Williams pulled out a knife in self-defense.

The 15-year-old was stabbed in the process, and deputies say Williams immediately called the Sheriff’s Office to report the stabbing, calling it self-defense.

“A lot of people expecting the person who stabbed Jayquan to be charged with it,” Jones said. “But after a thorough investigation, we determined it was self-defense.”

Fox 35 went to the victim’s home to speak to the parents of the 15-year-old and his half-sister, Weatherspoon, who now faces up to 30 years in prison, but no one was home.

Jones said, “In my 18 years, saddest case I've ever seen.”

Williams could not be reached.
