DeLand home often used for weddings catches fire, investigation launched
DELAND, Fla. (FOX 35 WOFL) - The City of DeLand Fire Department says they are investigating a fire that broke out at the Grant Bly house on Monday night.
Firefighters say that they responded to the home at about 11:40 p.m. Monday after receiving reports of a fire on east New York Avenue. Upon arrival, a man was on the roof of the structure, adjacent to the house fire. He told authorities he was inside the home on an upper level when he was awoken by a noise and later heard a crackling sound and found the house was on fire.
Firefighters say that he told them that he escaped through a window and jumped onto the adjacent roof. He was assisted off the roof by authorities and was transported to the Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford.
The home, which was said to be under construction to be renovated into a bar or restaurant, has often served as a venue for events such as weddings. It was heavily damaged.
The cause of the fire is reportedly still under investigation. The City of DeLand Fire Department was assisted by Orange City Fire Rescue, Volusia County EMS and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
