Brevard Co. deputy showing signs of improvement after shooting

The community is coming together to support a local Brevard County deputy who was shot during a prostitution bust.

Sheriff Wayne Ivey says Deputy John "Casey" Smith is still seriously hurt but is showing positive signs of improvement.

Sheriff Ivey says doctors have reduced the amount of sedatives smith is receiving in an effort to allow his system to recover.

Sheriff Ivey also says Smith's wife visited her husband in the hospital on Monday and he was able to respond to her questions by moving his head and squeezing her hand.

Sheriff Ivey says while these activities may seem like baby steps, they are actually giant strides since Thursday’s shooting.

Deputy Smith has another surgery scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
