Miami Dolphins two-time Pro Bowl safety Reshad Jones is skipping the first practice under new coach Brian Flores, who declined to give a reason for the absence of the team's highest-paid player.

Attendance was voluntary, and Flores said Jones has been attending team meetings but decided to train elsewhere. Flores, hired in February to replace Adam Gase, declined to say whether he was disappointed by the decision.

Jones, a starter for Miami since 2011, has four years remaining on his contract, with a base salary of $13 million this year. He played in 14 games last season and underwent shoulder surgery in February.

The practice Tuesday was the first of three extra sessions the Dolphins are allowed because they have a new coach.
