Life 3-days post Jacksonville Landing mass shooting
JACKSONVILLE (WOFL-FOX) - Gamers and fans alike ran for their lives Sunday afternoon when gunfire erupted during the Madden Tournament at the Jacksonville Landing.
Customers at a neighboring eatery, Chicago Pizza, poured into the Cinco de Mayo restaurant next door when David Katz opened fire after he lost a match during the tournament.
“I told everybody to hide,” said manager Naly Vega, “I put everybody under tables, in the bathrooms, I came over here and used the highchairs to lock the door. I locked it, and did the same on that door, and made sure nobody left.”
It wasn't until today Vega learned one of the women she helped secure was injured, “I didn't know till this morning that one of the girls was hurt, one of the girls in the bathroom was hurt. She called me and said thank you for everything I did. I don't know what I did, all I know is that I wanted to make sure everybody was safe.”
Today, only three days since the shooting, the Landing opened; and the streets were nearly empty.
One of the few walking around was a former employee at Chicago Pizza, Bryce Howard, who now questions what Jacksonville will look like from here on out.
“I guess the future of, not only Chicago Pizza here, but the GLF game bar,” Howard said, “and whether they'll be able to have a crowd come out again without the fear of someone getting mad because they got put out in the first round or something.”
Officials with the Landing released a statement stating they are praying for everyone involved and are fully cooperating with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Department during this investigation.
