Convicted killer scheduled for status hearing

Bessman Okafor is scheduled for a status hearing on Monday.

In 2015, Okafor was found guilty for the first-degree murder of 19-year-old Alex Zaldivar. Prosecutors said that Okafor, who was already serving a life sentence for a home invasion and robbery, masterminded the execution of the victim. Zaldivar was a witness of the home invasion and was set to testify against Okafor.

The jury had recommended the death penalty for Okafor, but only with a vote of 11 to one. Nonetheless, a judge sentenced him to receive the death penalty. But in 2017, the Florida Supreme Court ruled in favor of a new sentencing phase for the killer because the jury was not unanimous.

Okafor's new trial is not scheduled until 2020.
