Child critical after being run over on beach

A 4-year-old boy who was run over by a pickup truck in Ormond Beach is in critical but stable condition, authorities say.

According to Volusia County Beach Patrol, Antonio Vazquez was boogie boarding and was riding a wave close to the traffic lane on the beach.

Police say Vazquez got off the boogie board and ran into the front right bumper of the truck. The passenger side front tire rolled over Vazquez's chest and the back tire ran over his foot.  He was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando.

The 19-year-old driver of the truck tells FOX 35, "I stayed with him the whole time after it happened, and it wasn't really my fault. But I feel really bad about it."

The teenager says he was leaving Ormond Beach around 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, because water was starting to creep into the driving lanes. It was high tide.

Police say it was not the teen driver's fault, but rather it was just an accident.
