PAHOKEE, Fla. (FOX 13) - The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office says five people were killed when their small plane crashed into Lake Okeechobee Friday evening.
The plane went down 400 yards north of the Pahokee Airport, according to a tweet from PBSO.
A witness apparently saw someone swimming away from the crashed plane, which crashed around 3:30 p.m. A few hours later, PBSO said Marine Unit Deputies "recovered five individuals from the aircraft fuselage."
According to WPTV reporter Andrew Lofholm, the plane departed from Tampa International Airport. The FAA later confirmed it left Tampa for the Pahokee Airport.
The FAA confirmed the plane was a twin-engine Piper aircraft that went down in Lake Okeechobee.
The death investigation will be handled by PBSO Violent Crimes Division. The airplane crash will be investigated by the FAA and NTSB.
