Hurricanes

We are closely watching a system in the tropics that could become better organized by the weekend. Most models show the system remaining well to the east of Florida, but it could still produce wind gusts, rain bands and dangerous boating conditions.

On average, 12 tropical storms – six of which become hurricanes – form over the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea or the Gulf of Mexico during hurricane season, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Florida is often a target for storms, forcing thousands of people to evacuate with many fleeing to shelters.

Forecasters are predicting 'above-normal activity.

If storms threaten Florida in June or July, the state might need to rethink the use of mass shelters, shuttles to evacuate people and the way it recruits volunteers to help with storm recovery.

In their extended forecast, Colorado State University said that there is an above-average possibility for major hurricanes to make landfall along the continental United States coastline and in the Caribbean.
