A coordinated emergency response unfolded early Sunday morning on Lake Woodruff after a 56-year-old fisherman from Astor suffered a medical emergency aboard a pontoon boat.

According to officials, a 911 call came in at 6:45 a.m., and a VSO dispatcher immediately provided CPR instructions while Air One launched and located the boat. Flight Paramedic Matt Brunelle jumped from the helicopter into the lake and reached the man first.

Reports suggest that deputies, assisted by a Good Samaritan with a boat, continued CPR until EMS arrived and took over life-saving efforts. The man was transported to shore and then to the hospital.

Officials say that despite everyone's efforts, the man did not survive.

"Our sincere condolences go out to his family, friends and loved ones. Everyone involved gave their best to give him a chance," said a Volusia Sheriff's Office spokesperson.
