Officer who kicked teen suspect suspended for 16 hours
ORLANDO, Fla. (FOX 35 Orlando) - Orlando Police Officer Neal Chase is suspended for 16 hours, after investigators say he kicked a teenaged suspect.
Authorities say it all started at some apartments on Jackson Street last year. Officers responded to a call of vehicle burglaries, and when they arrived, they saw four suspects running away. One of them was a teenager.
According to the report, Officer Neal Chase yelled out, "Police K-9, stop running or I will release my dog and you will get bit!"
The teen went to his knees, but Officer Chase ordered him all the way to the ground. But the boy remained on his knees with both hands in the air.
That's when Officer Chase kicked the teen, knocking him to the ground on his back. The officers then cuffed him. In the report, Officer Chase says, "This was a front kick with the intent to push him back onto his butt, in order to secure him safely."
The Internal Affairs investigation found, that Officer Chase violated department regulations on obedience to policies and procedures, related to response to resistance and apprehension techniques.
Police Chief Orlando Rolon on Wednesday released a statement stating. He stands by the sustained findings of the Internal Affairs investigation.
Officer Chase has requested that his case be reviewed by binding arbitration.
