Flagler County teen arrested on hate crime charges after posting violent threats online
What we know:
ORLANDO, Fla. - A 14-year-old Palm Coast girl has been arrested on felony hate crime charges after posting a video on Snapchat threatening violence against students at a high school in her former school system in Ohio, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities were alerted to the video on January 23 by the Logan Police Department in Ohio.
The video, which was posted to a publicly accessible Snapchat story for the targeted high school, included racial slurs and explicit threats of violence, including remarks aimed at members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Detectives with the Flagler County Sheriff's Office Criminal Intelligence and Cyber Crimes units determined that the video caused significant alarm among students, parents, and school officials in Ohio.
Florida law allows for enhanced charges if a crime is motivated by factors such as race, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation.
The teen was arrested on January 24 and charged with written or electronic threats to kill with a hate crime enhancement.
She was processed at the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility before being transported to the Volusia County Juvenile Detention Center.
What we don't know:
This incident is still under investigation and a sentencing date has not yet been set.
