Florida family calls for traffic-calming measures after car crashes into home
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. - A Central Florida family says they are scared because of where their house is located. Shannon Box and her husband, Randy Box, reached out to FOX 35 for help.
The backstory:
The couple said a car slammed into their Orange County home last month.
The Florida Highway Patrol says the driver experienced a medical emergency before crashing. Shannon Box says this is just the latest in a string of issues, like cars driving through her front yard and leaving tire streaks on the neighborhood road from burnouts.
What they're saying:
"The front driver’s side was buried in right here," said Randy as he pointed to the plywood covering a hole in his home. "The hole goes from here all the way over to here."
Randy says he was inside the house at the time of the crash and ran outside to see what happened.
"I’m seeing headlights, and I’m hearing all this engine revving," said Randy. "The horn of the car going off."
"I don’t know what car they’re coming from," said Shannon. "My camera’s not catching them because they’re motion sensor, but I just put my Blink out the other day."
What's next:
Shannon says she’s been looking for other solutions to halt dangerous drivers and protect her property.
"I was thinking hey, maybe the city could put up guardrails along the roadways," said Shannon. "I see cars hit those all the time, and that stops them."
New safety measures are what Shannon says she’s hoping for, along with traffic-calming measures to prevent drivers from driving through her yard, doing burnouts, and driving recklessly through her neighborhood.
"I don’t even know if stop signs would stop them," said Shannon. "They run the stop sign all the time that’s there."
Shannon says she worries about the safety of her family and her neighbors, but finding a new home isn’t an option.
"We can’t afford to move," said Shannon. "He’s a veteran. We’ve only been here three years. We can’t afford to move."
Shannon says she and her husband are working with the insurance company to pay for the damage to their home caused by the driver crashing into it.
