Voters in Parkland's district to choose new school board members
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - Voters in Broward County, Florida, were choosing new school board members on Tuesday - including the parents of two victims of February's school shooting.
Ryan Petty and Lori Alhadeff are running six months after their daughters and 15 others died in the Feb. 14 attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Both are running on platforms for improving school safety, saying the district did not make it a priority before the shooting.
Petty's opponent for a countywide seat, incumbent Donna Korn, says that is not true. Alhadeff is running for an open seat in the district that includes Stoneman Douglas.
The election is also a referendum on the leadership of Superintendent Robert Runcie, who is supported by the nine-member board's majority.
