Tracking coronavirus: Florida reports under 4,000 new cases, 219 more deaths

Below is a log of the day's events as it relates to the global coronavirus pandemic. 

7:30 p.m. -- Respirators, testing supplies and other personal protective equipment (PPE), which have been key tools in the ongoing fight against COVID-19, are on a medical supply shortage list released by the FDA. See the list HERE.

6:00 p.m. -- Florida's COVID-19 numbers have been in decline, and experts believe this trend will continue, moving the state out of the spotlight. Read more HERE.

3:00 p.m. -- With more 170,000 deaths in the U.S. attributed to the disease, COVID-19 is now the No. 3 cause of death among Americans, the former CDC Director said. Details HERE.

2:00 p.m. -- The Governor's Task Force is discussing reopening nursing homes.

12:14 p.m. -- The Food and Drug Administration on Monday warned health care providers of false-positive coronavirus test results using the Thermo Fisher Scientific TaqPath COVID-19 Combo Kit. Read more HERE.

10:54 a.m. -- On Tuesday, the Florida Department of Health reported another 3,838 cases of coronavirus in the state and another 219 Florida resident deaths. The statewide total of cases is at 579,932.

8:27 a.m. -- Voters will head to the polls on Tuesday to cast their ballots in Florida’s primary election. Officials say there will be some important changes because of the coronavirus pandemic. Details HERE.

6:23 a.m. -- The majority of Floridians would support a statewide mask mandate, according to new survey from the University of South Florida. Read more HERE.

5:03 a.m. -- The Orange County School Board will proceed with plans to reopen schools for face-to-face learning on Friday, August 21. 

The board held a special meeting on Monday to discuss recommendations from the Medical Advisory Committee about in-class instruction. 

4:00 a.m. -- The Florida Department of Health says the number of known cases of COVID-19 in the state rose by 2,678 on Monday, the lowest reported since June. The total number of cases in Florida is now 576,094. The number of Florida resident deaths has reached 9,539, an increase of 87 since Sunday's update.
