Orlando's new pot policy passes first reading

ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Orlando is one step closer to allowing people caught with small amounts of marijuana to be fined instead of getting jail time.  Commissioners on Monday narrowly passed the first reading of a measure.

Mayor Buddy Dyer, who backs the ordinance, asked for parameters to be set for officers on how to decide whether a fine or jail time is appropriate.  The proposal would only apply to people in possession of 20 grams of marijuana or less.  It calls for a $50 fine for a first offense,  a $100 fine for a second offense, and a mandatory court appearance for a third offense.  

Commissioners plan to take a final vote on the ordinance on May 9.  If approved, it would take effect immediately.
