New details emerge about Lake Eola drone show mishap

New details have surfaced about the drone show that went off course over Lake Eola earlier this month.

According to the contract with the City of Orlando, the 500 drones operated by Sky Elements were meant to fly above the lake, staying clear of the crowd in designated areas. However, during the show, several drones collided midair and fell into the lake.

One drone struck a 7-year-old boy, sending the child to the hospital. Alezander was hurt after being hit by a falling drone, his parents, Adriana Edgerton and Jessica Lumsden, told FOX 35 News. He later underwent open-heart surgery for a chest injury and is recovering.

MORE HEADLINES:

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) placed some of Sky Elements’ operations on hold after the mishap. The FAA announced it is suspending the drone company’s "Part 107 Waiver," which allows operations beyond standard restrictions, such as assigning one pilot to control multiple drones, flying at night, or operating in populated areas.

The FAA is the only agency that can reinstate Sky Elements' "Part 107 Waiver." It is not clear how long Sky Elements' waiver would be suspended nor when it could be reinstated. The National Transportation and Safety Board (NTSB) has also opened its own investigation, which could take up to two years, according to a spokesperson.

When asked whether the suspension would last until the NTSB's investigation is completed, an FAA spokesperson said: "Safety will determine the suspension timeline."
