Man sentenced in DUI beach death of tourist

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - A Florida man who pleaded no contest to a DUI manslaughter charge in death of a North Carolina tourist was sentenced on Friday.  Circuit Judge Terence Perkins sentenced Shawn Patrick Doolan, 37, of New Smyrna Beach, to 10 years in prison, to be followed by two years of probation.  The charge stemmed from the June 2014 crash that killed Elizabeth Braly, of Hendersonville, North Carolina. 

"I hope that you can forgive me, but not for my sake, but for your own sake," said Doolan, "because I know that can harbor bitterness, destroy your life and will take you down a very dark path. I've already begun a life sentence. I don't take this lightly and I never have."

Braly, a mother of six, was taking pictures on the sand in Daytona Beach Shores with friends, her son and daughter-in-law when, according to Florida Highway Patrol, Doolan sped through a gate and tollbooth onto the beach, striking Braly.
