Rewards totaling $11,000 are being offered to help find whoever left a dog near death in a trash container in the downtown Long Beach area.

Chloe, a 9-month-old Maltipoo-terrier mix, was found on Saturday. She was covered in urine and tied up in a trash bag with rotting food in a dumpster in downtown Long Beach.

"It turned out that she has a skull fracture (and) she probably has some broken ribs," Fix Long Beach Pets and Animals board member Diana Kliche said.

"They were worried that her neck was broken, and her leg was snapped in half."

Kliche said it was one of the worst cases of animal abuse she had ever seen.

When rescuers first saw the pup, the entire side of her head was covered in bruises, where someone had beaten her. The dog is being treated at Long Beach Amimal Emergency Hospital, where a veterinarian said she is responding to treatment but has a long road to recovery.

JustFoodForDogs is offering a $10,000 reward and Fix Long Beach Pets and Animals put up $1,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case. Both groups are covering Chloe's expenses.

"I can't remember something this horrific," Frank Groff, a spokesman for JustFoodForDogs, told City News Service. "She's doing much, much better and she's responding to therapy."

Anyone with information was urged to contact Long Beach Animal Care Services at (562) 570-7387 or visit animalcarelongbeach.gov and write "dog abuse case" in the subject line.
