Law enforcement cracks down on school zone safety

LEESBURG, Fla. (FOX 35 ORLANDO) - Law enforcement across Florida are patrolling school zones to make sure kids are safe.

On County Road 473 in Leesburg, Lake County sheriff's deputies say that they receive complaints all the time about drivers speeding in school zones or passing school buses. This does not just happen here though -- it happens across the entire state.

Police are looking out for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians breaking the law. They say that it's not about how many people they can catch, but about how they can make these areas safer for students.

"Really the goal is not to necessarily go out and see how many tickets we can write, but obviously it's to enhance the safety of the children, but also to promote awareness and education for drivers so they know to slow down and be careful," said Lt. John Herrell of the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

The school zone safety crackdown is happening all week throughout the state. Officials welcome tips about problem areas. They have already received calls reporting license plates of habitual offenders.
