Apartment theft investigation
The backstory:
The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office said the victim in the incident contacted them to report a delayed burglary of numerous pieces of jewelry on Dec. 22.
The victim told deputies there was no forced entry to the apartment, and the only person who would have had access to the apartment during the time of the burglary was the apartment complex’s maintenance worker.
Reports show detectives then responded to the Tuscan Reserve Apartments in Palm Coast and started an investigation.
Timeline:
Deputies said the victim called the next day to report she had found some of the stolen jewelry at a pawn shop in Bunnell.
Sheriffs stated they went to the shop and were able to positively identify the jewelry. The transaction receipt from the shop showed tPowell had sold the jewelry on Dec. 13, deputies said.
Records show Powell was employed as the apartment complex’s maintenance worker at the time.
By the numbers:
Through the investigation, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office said they discovered Powell had been to 10 different pawn shops throughout Flagler and Volusia counties and sold a total of 33 items, mostly women’s jewelry, since Nov. 4.
What they're saying:
"This man was trusted to access people’s apartments and betrayed that trust and stole from them," said Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly. "Detectives are hard at work seeking additional victims to make sure this dirtbag is held accountable for all his crimes. I encourage all Tuscan Reserve Apartments residents to double-check and make sure that nothing is missing, and, if it is, try to recover your property."
Are there additional victims?
What's next:
Reports show Powell was transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility before being released on bond.
Detectives said they are searching for additional victims, due to Powell having had access to multiple apartments during his time of employment and the significant number of times he pawned and sold jewelry.
Residents at the complex are encouraged to check for missing jewelry or other items and contact the Flagler County Sheriff's Office non-emergency line at (386) 313-4911, referencing case number 2025-109737, if they believe items have been stolen.
