Flagler Beach moves forward with $14 million plan to rebuild fishing pier

Flagler Beach is one step closer to rebuilding its iconic fishing pier, which was severely damaged by Hurricane Ian and further impacted by Hurricane Nicole.

Pier has been closed since 2022 hurricanes

What we know:

The Flagler Beach City Council has awarded a contract worth over $14 million for the reconstruction, which will include making the pier more than 10 feet taller and reinforcing it with concrete to withstand future storms. FEMA is funding most of the project, with additional support from the state.

What we don't know:

While the project timeline has been outlined, it's unclear exactly when the final stages of the project, like the promenade and beach walk, will be finished. There is also no mention of any potential challenges or delays in construction that could arise during the rebuilding process.

The backstory:

The fishing pier, a beloved landmark in Flagler Beach, was severely damaged by two major storms — Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Nicole.

The damage has kept the pier closed for months, and residents and tourists alike have been waiting for its reconstruction.

As Flagler Beach approaches its centennial celebration in April, city leaders are focused on revitalizing the area with major improvements, including the pier's rebuilding and the addition of the Beach Walk project, which will enhance access to the beach and surrounding areas.

What they're saying:

City Manager Dale Martin described the rebuilding process as an "exciting time" for Flagler Beach, highlighting not only the pier's restoration but also private developments and redevelopment projects taking place in the area.

"We have the hotel. There are a couple of other private developments. Redevelopment projects that are going on. We’ve got the pier," he said.

City officials are optimistic about the project’s positive impact on the community, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary this year.

Timeline:

The timeline for rebuilding the pier is as follows:

  • Surveying work to begin within the next couple of weeks
  • Six-month permitting process
  • Design for the Beach Walk to be completed by late October to early November
  • Phase 1 (construction) to start in early 2026
  • Phase 2 (promenade) will take 4-6 months, with completion targeted by the end of 2026 The first 100 feet of the pier will be preserved, while the rest will be completely rebuilt.

The first 100 feet of the pier will be restored to preserve its history, while the rest will be entirely rebuilt. The project is expected to take about a year and a half to complete.

Why you should care:

The rebuilding of Flagler Beach's iconic pier is not only an important part of the community's history and identity but also a major step in revitalizing the area as it nears its 100th anniversary.

The project will help protect the landmark from future storms and provide enhanced amenities for both residents and visitors. The timeline and the involvement of FEMA funding make this a significant local development. The completion of the project will bring new opportunities for tourism, economic growth, and community pride, local leaders said.
