Save-A-Life: event for distracted driving prevention

SANFORD, Fla (WOFL FOX 35) - Local doctors say the number of trauma cases has increased dramatically due to distracted drivers. That's why for the first time the Seminole State College is partnering up with Central Florida Regional Hospital to participate in a national tour called "Save-A-Life."

The event centers on reminding drivers about the dangers of getting behind the wheel while distracted, whether it is being drunk or texting and driving. Either way, a second of being distracted could cost you your life.

“The bottom line is, it increases your risk of having an accident of almost 25-percent, just texting,” said Central Florida Regional Hospital Trauma Medical Director Doctor Alexander Evans.

Dr. Evans said he sees more trauma patients who have been hurt while texting and driving. “I would say that’s been the case the past decade, there’s been increase particularly texting and driving has been an issue over time,” Dr. Evans stated.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says nearly half a million Americans are hurt every year in crashes involving distracted drivers. These simulations and DUI goggles are just snippets of what organizers hope to accomplish in their “Save-A-Life” tour.

“This is something we want to support the community and really educate on safety,” said Dr. Evans.

The event is Thursday February 18th from 10am to 5pm at Seminole State College located at 100 Weldon Boulevard in Sanford.
