Orlando firefighters use their detective skills to catch accused burglar
ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - An Orlando man is facing burglary and fire arm charges, after stealing from Orlando fire fighters, authorities say.
Everyday, fire fighters give it their all, but over at Station 17 off Millenia Blvd., investigators say a burglar was breaking into their cars, in gated area ,even getting away with a gun. But it didn't stop there.
"On the second night tried to come back and break into the fire station," says Deputy Chief Ian Davis.
Police say, surveillance showed the man tried going into the fire station with the gun, but didn't succeed.
So rescuers decided to take precautions.
"One of the engineers chose to set up a motion detector on his own and when the detector went off he went to the rear of the fire station with other fire fighters and detained the burglary suspect."
The guys who usually go into burning buildings, instead surrounded suspect Malcom Derogene after he tried running and hiding from them.
"We were all elated. We were able to detain him until OPD arrived and he gave up peacefully."
These rescuers realizing they too need to be careful.
"Focus on our station security. Make sure our vehicles are locked make sure that the station's are locked."
