New roof installed at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts
ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Workers raised the new roof to the top of the Dr. Phillips Center's new theater, Steinmetz Hall, on Saturday.
Observers, like David Lee, were happy to see progress on the Downtown Orlando landmark.
“It's exciting!” Lee said. “There's a lot of development going on, and this is kind of at the heart of it all.”
Workers blocked off two lanes of South Street in downtown while a special 600-ton crane guided the new roof into place.
“A construction team will be up there - ready for it - and throughout the day, they'll be working on it to bolt it into place," said Lorri Shaban, a spokeswoman for the Dr. Phillips Center.
This is the largest section of the center's canopy roof as they continued building the new Steinmetz Hall and the green room.
When it's finished, the 1,700 seat theater will be the most acoustically-advanced venue in the world.
This new 142-ton roof structure will be attached to the building's existing roof.
Shaban said this was the key to putting the rest of the hall together.
“In probably, sometime in May, you'll have the entire roof all the way constructed and that will allow us to do all of the construction below,” Shaban said.
Just last week, the Dr. Phillips Center celebrated the end of the second phase of the new hall's construction. We're on the third phase now. Crews won't finish until the Summer of 2020.
