Mom charged after infants found dead

A Brevard county woman was arrested Monday after two newborn babies were found dead inside a West Melbourne home, police said.

Rachael Lynn Thomas, 30, has been charged with two counts neglect of a child and one count of tampering with evidence.  She remains in the Brevard County Jail on a $30,000 bond.

Police were called to the home on Laurel Oak Street Sunday afternoon. They are not releasing who made the 911 call.

One of the infants was transported to a nearby hospital and the other was dead at the home, police said. A medical examiner is performing an autopsy on the children.

“These cases are tough.” Said Capt. Richard Cordeau of the West Melbourne Police Department. “We will continue collecting evidence and searching for answers to our questions, which at this point we have a lot of.”

Cordeau went on to say that this was "Very unusual circumstances, and again, we are working to answers the question we have, which are a lot."

Melbourne police said they have not had any previous contact with Thomas. Now, DCF has opened an investigation into the family.
