It's official: Former Vice President Joe Biden launches 2020 presidential campaign

It's official: former Vice President Joe Biden is running for president.

Biden, 76, made the announcement via Twitter early Thursday morning.

"The core values of this nation… our standing in the world… our very democracy...everything that has made America -- America --is at stake," Biden wrote. "That’s why today I’m announcing my candidacy for President of the United States."

Biden is entering a crowded 2020 Democratic primary season, which now features more than 20 candidates. Given his high profile in U.S. politics, he will enter the race as a front-runner.

One of the most recognizable names in politics, Biden served for two terms as Barack Obama's vice president after nearly four decades as a senator from Delaware. His high-profile, working-class background and connection to the Obama years would help him enter the race as a front-runner, though he faces questions about his age and whether his more moderate record fits with a party that has become more liberal.

President Donald Trump seemed to mock Biden on Twitter after the announcement with a tweet of his own.

"Welcome to the race Sleepy Joe. I only hope you have the intelligence, long in doubt, to wage a successful primary campaign. It will be nasty - you will be dealing with people who truly have some very sick & demented ideas. But if you make it, I will see you at the Starting Gate!"
