Hookworm scare closes Palm Coast dog park

The dog parks at James Holland Park in Palm Coast are closed for a few days, while the city sprays for hookworm.

The city received a call this week from the owner of a puppy that played in both dog parks this week. The puppy tested positive for hookworm. It's a highly contagious blood sucking parasite that can make dogs and humans very sick.  While no one knows exactly where the puppy got the hookworm, the news prompted the city to take action.

"We made the decision to temporarily close the dog park, until we could find out what we needed to do to treat it," said city spokeswoman Cindi Lane.

Hookworms are spread through animal feces. If a person steps on it or touches it, it can be absorbed through the skin.  Parents and dog owners kept their distance at Holland Park Thursday afternoon as the city prepares to treat the area.

"We've ordered the product and it should be here either today or Friday," Lane said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, some ways to prevent hookworm include having your dog vaccinated, screened twice a year and kept on a leash when walked.
