Fatal accident in Daytona Beach near Halifax River

A fatal accident occurred on Tuesday at the east end of Silver Beach Avenue near the Halifax River.

The Daytona Beach Police Department said that police and fire units responded to a 911 call at the construction zone for the new high-rise bridge connecting Orange and Silver Avenue. A maintenance worker at a nearby apartment complex told police that he heard a loud crash and saw a black four-door Kia vehicle in the river.

Upon arrival, first responders said that they found a woman, Shana Ferring, dead inside the Kia. The vehicle has since been removed from the water.

Investigators said that they believe the driver sped west on Silver Beach and drove off the dge of the road, flying around 75 feet in the air before striking a concrete pylon for the new bridge and then landing in the water. The force of the impact sheared off the top part of the vehicle.

According to detectives, Ferring died upon impact, but the exact cause of death will be determined after an autopsy.
