Deputy-involved shooting in Orange County

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Three Orange County deputies are on leave after a traffic stop ended in gunfire late on Wednesday night.

The incident happened around 9:20 p.m., along 3rd Avenue in the Taft area of Orange County, according to Sheriff's Office spokesman Jeff Williamson. Three deputies in an unmarked car stopped a driver for an unknown reason. When the driver stopped the car, deputies say he got out and pointed a gun at them. That's when deputies opened fire, injuring him. 

Deputies have not said if the armed suspect fired his gun, but none of the three deputies were hurt.

"No one at the OCSO appears to be injured," Orange County Sheriff's Office spokesman Jeff Williamson Williamson said.  "A subject however has been transported to the hospital." The name of the suspect has not yet been released. Inside the vehicle was also a female passenger. She is being detained and interviewed by investigators.

Captain Carlos Torres of the Orange County Sheriff's Office says that "We're always on heightened alert. That's why we trained and why our training is paramount because we always have to be ready for the unknown and this is a prime example of the unknown."

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating the deputy-involved shooting. As is customary, the three deputies involved were placed on administrative leave.
