Deputies announce memorial for K-9 officer Forrest

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is collecting donations to create a memorial honoring fallen K-9 officer Forrest.

34-year-old Eddie Durell Powell was shot by deputies on November 22, ending a standoff after Powell shot and killed Forrest.

K-9 Forrest was rushed to Deland Animal Hospital following the shooting but couldn’t be saved.

Deputies are now accepting donations at TD Bank branches in Volusia County, Seminole County, Orlando or Jacksonville toward their VCSO Charity Committee, which will oversee the memorial’s build.

Donations will support the county’s K-9 program and the upcoming memorial.

Powell is now charged with use of a deadly weapon against a police dog, two counts of attempted second-degree murder with a firearm, possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon, fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer, and failure to register a motor vehicle.
